"It has been a difficult two weeks we would rather not have had at the club," he said after the 1-0 win at St. Andrews.
"We wanted to make the right sort of headlines and we have done that with this result.
"I'm not surprised by the attitude of the players. We wanted to give something back to our fans and all I asked for was a commitment to the shirt and to work as hard as they could.
"We have not had that feeling of winning for a long time and this will be a great lift for the players.
"I was just delighted that we had a game as I've had to deal with a lot of things over the last fortnight that have nothing to do with football management.
"I'm at my best when I am preparing for games and in a match situation.
"No-one regrets the incident in La Manga more than me. I've already put up my hand and said I could have done better.
"We now have a lot of bridges to rebuild and the only way to win back the fans is to win more games in a bid to avoid relegation.
"But we need an internal investigation into what went on in Spain. I am not putting a timescale on that, but it will take place."
