The 24 year-old joined from Kilmarnock last January and doesn't figure in manager Craig Levein's plans. He hoped his appearance against Inter Milan in this week's friendly indicated he could force his way back into the reckoning.
But he was told the following day that he was being released from his contract in the final year of his deal.
Tommy Wright could suffer a similar fate. The England under-19 international striker has had little opportunity since the arrival of Levein and looks set to be the next player to leave the Walkers Stadium.
Levein is still looking for a new striker to boost a forward line of Dion Dublin, Mark De Vries, David Connolly and the still injured Lee Morris and that suggests Wright will not figure in his plans.
City took a young side to Rushden & Diamonds for their latest pre-season friendly and were beaten 2-0.
New signing Peter Gilbert was taken off after an hour with a thigh injury, but should be available for the friendly at Oxford on Saturday.
