Campbell, 27 spent last season on loan at Ian Holloways Blackpool and, despite the Seasiders declaring a strong interest in bringing the striker to the club on a permanent basis, Campbells wage demands proved a stumbling block.
However, QPR have more financial freedom following their £14m takeover in 2007 by Formula One magnates Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatiore.
A QPR source said: 'DJ Campbell would be a popular move and I'd expect him to earn a five-figure weekly salary.
'The manager has enquired about a lot of players and DJ would fit the bill. They like DJ down here, particularly as he is a QPR fan.'
