Foxes felled at Pompey

Portsmouth hauled themselves off the foot of the npower Championship with their first win of the season, a thumping 6-1 success against 10-man Leicester. On-loan Stoke winger Liam Lawrence tucked away an early penalty and doubled the lead with a deflected free-kick before half-time. David Nugent grabbed his first league goal of the season in the second half and Dave Kitson also got in on the act as Pompey's luck finally turned for the better. Michael Morrison gifted them the lead after just nine minutes when, for reasons best known to himself, he raised his arm as he jumped for a corner and Lawrence tucked away the spot-kick. Referee Keith Hill then harshly sent off Miguel Vitor for a foul on Nugent and Lawrence smashed in the free-kick with the help of a deflection off Bruno Berner. After the break Nugent kept his head to score from the angle after his initial effort was blocked and Kitson chipped in the fourth. Steve Howard bundled in a consolation from a goalmouth scramble, but some more generous defending allowed Kitson to tap in number five and Michael Brown's solo effort capped a stunning win as some of the gloom finally began to lift around Fratton Park.
